Langkawi Carbon Exchange "LCX"

The Langkawi carbon exchange was developed by Bu People in 2007 to serve as an intergrated framework for carbon trading.

Langkawi has been experiencing extensive deforestration through encroachment into forest reserve land. Which has lead to an urgent need to repair this damage. The approach to do so, calls for a well managed and coordinated program in line with a CDM carbon forestry project.

Our effort to replant and repair the damage requires carbon offset revenue derived from the global voluntary carbon markets. It is also our goal to play a part in bringing about a change in our economic mindsets towards ecosystem services. In so doing making the priceless valuable.

Revenues derived from the voluntary carbon markets will go towards the extensive reforestation needed. The objective is to create the necessary biodiversity bridge or corridors. To link back the six forest reserves on the island before it move beyond our reach to preserve our natural heritage.

LCX seeks to set up the methodologies to develop a strong governance to ensure that the goals of CDM carbon forestry projects for long term environmental benefits are met.

Why Bamboo?

Bamboo is well known for its amazing growth and biomass accumulation which serve as a reliable biomass carbon storage. The giant bamboo clum is a viable carbon storage through carbon sequestration. The average above ground storage of carbon through bamboo plantation per hectare is 60 ton.

Thus making bamboo an optimal carbon crop. Furthermore, it is totally sustainable with an average life cycle of 60 years of consistent carbon storage.

The LCX program calls for planting bamboo and rainforest seedlings to serve as a dual objective. Bamboo for carbon capture and rainforest seedlings for biodiversity and ecosystem rehabilitation.

It is important for us to work towards a natural systems functionality and do not disturb it. We can benefit from a virtous cycle where organic matter, biomass and biodiversity are restored, helping us to achieve massive carbon sequestration gains, increased fertility from nutrient cycling and we can restore infiltration and retention of rainfall naturally, regulating the hydrological cycle and returning soil moisture, relative humidity and microclimates. This is our small step towards large-scale ecosystem rehabilitation.

The rainforest also serve as a vital water source for many families living at the edge of the rainforest. These families are totally dependent on the natural springs for their total water supply. Deforestration is a treat to the villagers survival and livelihood.  LCX seeks to work towards long term sustainability through the reforestation and planting of bamboo.
