Langkawi is an island with varied Land Use and Land Use Change, land bank which are under utilised. Apart from rubber plantation the economical benefits from other agricultural crops are basic and minimal. The inroads into fruit orchards agro economy are also in its infancy stage and have not brought economical strides into the rural economy.
Bupeople has made intensive inroads into giant bamboo cultivation on small plots of titled land over the past decade . The knowledge gained through the sivil culture of planting bamboo has given us indepth knowledge on above ground carbon sequestration and the relationship between phytoliths (plantstones) for below ground carbon sequestration. These knowledge has set the foundation for developing viable Clean Development Mechanism projects in the area of fugitive emission capture.
Giant bamboo is indigenous to the island and traditionally played an important role in the rural communities. This is due to its availability, fast growth, high production of shoots and culms and short maturity cycle. It has been used for a variety of purpose ranging from timber, food, handicraft, furniture and household utilities.
Bupeople has embarked on a program, partnering with local land owners to plant giant bamboo clums to create CER's to derive new income channels for the rural communities. Unlike other agricultural crops which require meaninful plot ratio. Giant bamboo cultivation can start at micro plot as minimal as 5 meter X 5 meter. Through the collective effort of the program, the bio-sequestration project can be registered generating significant CER for trade. The project also deal with long term ecosystem rehabilitations and rural community economic development from job creation.
The future of giant bamboo cultivation is promising with new development in biomass renewable energy. Emissions from combustion of biomass fuel is considered carbon neutral. Technological break through in super capacitor energy from activated bamboo carbon holds new hope for cheap and clean renewable energy for island communities like Langkawi, further reducing its dependency on fossil fuels.
Bupeople welcomes the participation of individuals and agencies to further expand the potential and benefits derived from bamboo. Creating a better world and future for our next generation.
The bamboo carbon farm project will impact our communities in three main dimensions:
